Call Me Kuchu premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Teddy Award for Best Documentary and the Cinema Fairbindet Prize (German theatrical distribution), as well as second place in the Panorama Audience Award (behind Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present), and an honorable mention for the Siegessäule Readers’ Choice Award.  The documentary received funding from the Bertha BRITDOC Connect Fund to fund outreach and advocacy work involving the film in East Africa. Call Me Kuchu also screened as part of Hot Docs (it's North American premiere!) and participated in Good Pitch.

CALL ME KUCHU tells the story - at once tragic and hopeful - of a tight-knit community of gay and transgender Ugandans in a country where homosexuality is a crime punishable by life imprisonment. At a time when an "Anti-Homosexuality Bill" tabled in Parliament promises even harsher penalties, and religious leaders orchestrate ferocious anti-gay marches, Uganda's "kuchus" find themselves fighting for justice and freedom on the frontlines of Africa's gay rights movement.
