A Small Act
Roger Ebert calls A SMALL ACT “heartwarming.” The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon calls the project “important.” After debuting at Sundance in January 2010, A SMALL ACT has gone on to play festivals worldwide including Hot Docs, Los Angeles Film Festival and Edinburgh. It was then broadcast on HBO as part of HBO Documentary Films’ Summer Series. A SMALL ACT has been enjoyed by the likes of Bill Gates, George Soros and Harry Belafonte, but it’s the everyday audience members who have helped to create a “Small Act” movement. Since the film’s premiere, the Hilde Back Education Fund, the scholarship foundation at the heart of the film’s story, has received $400,000 dollars in donations and roughly a million dollars in additional pledges from people hoping to sponsor new students as the fund expands. Additionally, HBO and Network for Good have partnered to create the “What’s Your Small Act?” website at www.networkforgood.org/asmallact, where people can research volunteer opportunities or donate to a variety of causes.
A SMALL ACT is the winner of the Humanitas Prize, the Adrienne Shelly Director’s Award, the Film Independent Elle/Garnier Director’s Fellowship and several audience awards. It began its theatrical run in October 2010 in New York, and was part of a semi-theatrical screening series around the country.
